Malioboro Street is a tourist area in the heart of Jogjakarta, Indonesia. Jogjakarta is a tourist destination in Southeast Asia that can be visited alone by yourself easily as a solo traveler.
Jogjakarta is one of the destinations in Southeast Asia that can be visited alone by yourself easily. A solo traveler can enjoy a different atmosphere from where they come. Their ancestral culture is still maintained, although modernization also happens.
This region was once an independent kingdom before in 1950 to become part of the Republic of Indonesia. Jogjakarta is one of the areas developed for tourism purposes, just like other regions in Indonesia, such as Bali. Jogjakarta may already be known as one of the southeast Asia solo travel destination.
Jogjakarta has an attraction for both local and foreign tourists. Mainly for domestic tourists, the warm atmosphere of Jogjakarta with a friendly community can make you miss this place for anyone who has visited it, or who have lived there.
After visiting, you want to come back again. For local tourists, Jogjakarta is one of the leading destinations that are easily accessible by any transportation because of its location on the island of Java. Thus, the costs incurred from Jakarta or Bandung to Jogjakarta are not expensive. Either by train or by public bus.
Some foreign tourists usually stop in Jogja after transit in Jakarta and then continue their journey to other destinations in Indonesia. Access from Jogjakarta airport to existing tourist destinations is not far. However, for solo travelers who want another sensation, it is better after a transit in Jakarta to continue the trip to Jogjakarta by train because, throughout the journey, tourists can enjoy the atmosphere of rice paddies and residential areas that are different from those in the origin of tourists. From Jakarta to Jogja, it can take in about 7 hours.
It’s much different if you use an airplane that only takes about 45 minutes. But if you have a lot of time to travel and have no issues regarding the schedule of the tour agent, the train is more interesting than the plane. This condition might be one of the advantages if we travel alone.
If you have never come to Jogja and want to travel here, there are a few things you need to know so you can feel the real atmosphere of Jogja. Especially if time limits do not bind you.
To go to one destination to another destination in Jogja, you can use a bus that passes the tourist destination route. Upon arrival from the plane or train station.
Tourists can continue the journey by bus or private transportation such as taxis, or there is other similar transportation with Uber. In Jogja, at least you can rely on city buses (Trans Jogja) to support mobility in the city. Trans Jogja is somewhat more comfortable because it is air-conditioned.
Trans Jogja is a reliable public transportation mode because the order and route are available on the map at every bus stop. But, even though it’s more comfortable, sometimes the condition of the bus is also not so good. The main advantage of this transportation is because it is very economical.
To blend in with the atmosphere of Jogja, you should choose accommodation around Malioboro Street. Malioboro is a tourist area in the heart of Jogjakarta. If you stay overnight in this area, then you will easily walk around and enjoy the atmosphere. It includes street performances and art that are unique in Malioboro, especially on Saturday nights.
At certain moments traditional art performances are held at Malioboro Street, and the advantages are you don’t have to pay more to watch it. The nature of this stage is like street art, but what is displayed is a traditional art from various regions in Indonesia.
Hotel At Malioboro Jogjakarta
There are various choices of places to stay. From hostels to five-star hotels, everything is in the vicinity of Malioboro. If you remain in the area, the advantage is you can enjoy the atmosphere of the morning and night, the bustle of tourists and residents there.
People can make either a booking on the spot or by online hotel booking to stay in Jogjakarta, Indonesia. Some of the online platforms are already available in Indonesia, such as booking.com, Agoda, Traveloka, hotels.com, Reddoorz, and Airbnb.
The atmosphere during the day is a bit less crowded, maybe because of the hot weather like daylight in other tropical regions. But at night this place comes alive, full of young people and a group of students who visit there.
It was in Malioboro Street that KM 0 from Yogyakarta began. At this spot, there are standing ancient buildings that are identical to European structures. The designation is now for the post office building and also for the office of a bank.
Even though it’s crowded, in this area, you still have to be careful when you want to cross the road. Because I often see tourists who are complacent because they want to immediately go to the center of the crowd so that ignoring what crosses the path. Meanwhile, on a busy street, motorcyclists often go fast.
In the KM 0 area, some people wear costumes, both funny and traditional costumes (may depend on certain days). You can take pictures with them by paying a small number of pennies.
From KM 0, if you continue south, you will see the Jogjakarta palace. If you walk towards the south, then you will see a shopping complex and street vendors selling a variety of goods, such as clothing, electronics, souvenirs to Yogyakarta specialties.
Jogjakarta Food Travel Destinations
Food travelers who want to try Jogjakarta typical foods can buy them at affordable prices. While the drawback is that there are still minimal places to eat. Even so, many local people crowded together to purchase various foods.
On the east side, there is the traditional market, Bringharjo. This market does not open until late at night. So if you want to feel the atmosphere of a traditional market, you can visit there in the morning. You can also buy typical Indonesian clothes (batik), patterned in detail with a variety of colors.
The prices offered to tend to be cheaper than those offered in stores. The drawback is if someone is washing the clothes, the dye might fade and can affect our other garments. If you want a better product, you better buy it from a roadside shop along Malioboro. So you go to the traditional market to walk around and enjoy the atmosphere. Don’t forget to keep your luggage, including wallets and contents.
Public Transportation at Malioboro Street
There are other options for tourists to explore the Malioboro area. Tourists can rent a horse cart or rickshaw to get around. For solo travelers who want to ride a horse cart, you can do it by sharing with other tourists because often, the horse cart driver waits for his full quota before leaving for a tour. Moreover, by sharing, we can save costs.
Horse carts are public vehicles that are driven by horses with their eyes closed. The driver will direct the horse’s course. The carts will be on the same lane as the motorbike and also the car. But no need to worry about safety, because both the horse cart driver and motor vehicle driver are familiar with the situation and already understand each other’s movements.
Rent a rickshaw: there are two choices. Option one is the rickshaws that are driven by human power and which are driven by machines. This motorized rickshaw is a modification of the two-wheeled vehicle whose front combined with conventional rickshaw. This type of vehicle is more suitable for use in the afternoon or night because, during the day, the weather will be sweltering.
But I also often find tourists who use this vehicle during the daytime (maybe because of limited time?). Engined ones can carry tourists to destinations farther than conventional ones, try to make a bargain before driving. Including if you want to visit a wider-area, bargaining is better at the beginning of the transaction. For solo travelers, this type of vehicle is more suitable for driving (although more than one person can ride it).
From the Malioboro area heading north, there is the train station. From this train station, we can go to other destinations in Indonesia. It includes going to Jakarta or other areas of Java. Train ticket reservations can be made at least 3 hours before departure; ticket reservations can be made online or on the spot.
For online bookings, tourists still have to exchange the code they have for paper tickets at the station. So try to come at least an hour before the train departure because you have to take the train ticket first.
If people prefer to continue the journey by airplane, from Malioboro, we can take a public bus. But for more practical use of online taxi transportation. There are some of the biggest online taxi companies in Indonesia. They are ready to deliver you to your destination at prices that match those in the application (mobile platform). Therefore, you don’t need to worry about being overcharged.
